CDS General Bipin Rawat visits Karwar Naval Base

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, ADC visited Karwar Naval Base on 5 April 2021 to review the progress of Project Seabird. The General was received by Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar who took over the command in February 2021.

During the visit, the CDS visited the Ship-lift facility and also undertook harbour familiarisation by boat. He was briefed on the progress of Project Seabird and the plan for future infrastructure there. The CDS also interacted with officers and sailors in the station.

The Indian Navy base located near Karwar in Karnataka, INS Kadamba, is expected to become the largest naval base in the eastern hemisphere after completion of expansion Phase II of the construction of the base, code-named Project Seabird. Phase I of the project was completed in 2005 and the second phase began in 2011. INS Kadamba is currently the third-largest Indian naval base.

INS Kadamba at Karwar shall house the C-in-C headquarter for MTC. INS Kadamba was commissioned as the Base Depot Ship at Naval Base, Karwar with the main aim of decongesting Mumbai naval base. Upon completion of Phase II of the project, larger infrastructure like additional jetties, specialized submarine pens and Naval airfield shall be established on the base.
Earlier in March 2021, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar had visited Karwar Naval Base to review operational preparedness ships and units at the base and the development of the ongoing Phase II of Project Seabird.
