IFFI is India's Pride, says I&B Minister Javadekar

The first Steering Committee meeting for International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2019 was held in Goa on 14 July 2019. The meeting was held to ensure the necessary coordination between key stakeholders involved in the process of organising the film festival. In a press conference post the Steering Committee meeting, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant released a special IFFI Golden Jubilee Edition Poster. The festival is set to take place from 20 - 28 November 2019 in Goa.
During the media interaction, Mr Javadekar said that IFFI is India’s pride and especially significant this year as it marks the Golden Jubilee Edition. He also announced that the President of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences John Bailey has confirmed his participation for IFFI 2019.
This year, roadshows will be conducted across seven cities in India to reach out to the film fraternity for developing a buzz for the festival. Business exhibitions to display relevant technologies for films and an exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi will also be organised in the backdrop of the festival.
Mr Javadekar added that the number of private theatres booked for showing films during the festival will be increased further to cater to the high demand for extra screening of popular films. Russia may be on board as the country focus this year.
Students of premier film institutes including FTII and SRFTI will be involved in the management of this year’s festival. The aim is to finalise the list of films to be shown this year by September to allow sufficient time to plan their attendance at the festival. The Union Minister also added that this year’s festival will pay tribute to Ex Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar who was instrumental in making Goa the permanent venue for IFFI.
Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that organisation of the 50th edition of IFFI is a proud moment for the state and his government will leave no stones unturned to ensure the best of infrastructure and hospitality arrangements to make this edition of the festival a memorable one.
The Steering Committee meeting was attended by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, I&B Secretary Amit Khare, Chief Secretary of Goa Parimal Rai, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) Vice Chairman Subhash Phal Dessai, representatives of the film community including Shaji N Karun, AK Bir, Rahul Rawail, Manju Borah, Ravi Kottarakara and Madhur Bhandarkar and senior officials of the Directorate of Film Festivals, Entertainment Society of Goa, I&B Ministry and the Goa Government.
In the media briefing, Mr Javadekar also informed that eminent film personalities including Karan Johar, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, Feroze Abbas Khan and Subhash Ghai will also be part of the Steering Committee.
About IFFI: The film festival is organized by the Government of India from 20-28 November every year in Goa. It aims at providing a common platform to the world of cinema to project the excellence of the art of film-making. It is India’s most prestigious film festival and also the first International Film Festival held anywhere in Asia, being hosted by the state of Goa since 2004.
