The emphatic victory of Adv Rahul Narwekar in Colaba during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections is emblematic of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) evolving strategy in urban constituencies. Securing 81,085 votes against Congress candidate Heera Devasi’s 32,504, Narwekar’s triumph by a decisive margin of 48,581 votes is not just a personal milestone but a reflection of shifting political dynamics in Mumbai’s historically competitive landscape.

In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Rahul Narwekar’s victory in Colaba was nothing short of impressive, securing 81,085 votes. This represents a significant improvement over his previous win in 2019, where he had garnered 57,420 votes against Ashok Jagtap of Indian National Congress who bagged 41,225 votes. This 2024 margin of victory of 48,581 votes is an increase from his earlier margin of 16,195 votes, further solidifying his hold on the constituency. 

Narwekar's opponent, Congress candidate Heera Devasi, secured 32,504 votes in 2024. In contrast, Devasi’s 2019 performance was weaker, with only 21,666 votes. This shift reflects the growing dominance of the BJP in Colaba, but also highlights the difficulties faced by the Congress in making substantial gains, even with Narwekar’s rise.

Another key metric to observe is the voter turnout. In 2024, Colaba recorded a turnout of 44.5%, a marked improvement over the 2019 elections, which saw only 41.2% voter participation. While the rise in turnout signals greater engagement, it still suggests considerable room for increasing electoral participation, especially among the affluent sections of the constituency.

This comparison also shows a broader trend in the BJP’s strategy. Despite ongoing political fragmentation within the opposition, the BJP, particularly under Narwekar’s leadership, has effectively consolidated support from a wide cross-section of Colaba’s demographic, including its working-class and migrant communities.
