PM Modi Inaugurates World's Longest Bi-Lane Tunnel In Arunachal Pradesh

By A Draft Correspondent

In a momentous event on 9 March 2024, on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the border conflict with China in eastern Ladakh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the long-awaited Sela Tunnel, a significant infrastructure project that stands as the world's longest bi-lane tunnel at an altitude of 13,800 feet. This is also the highest mountain tunnel road in India.

The tunnel, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation at a cost of Rs 825 crore, is expected to provide a strategic edge to India's military capabilities and enhance the socio-economic development of the region. The objective of its construction is to ensure a year-round connectivity in the region of Arunachal Pradesh, especially in the harsh winters, that is marred by border dispute between India and China.

Sela Tunnel is strategically important to India
The Sela Tunnel, located in Arunachal Pradesh, will ensure all-weather connectivity to the crucial Tawang region, which borders China. This remarkable feat of engineering comprises two tunnels, with lengths of 1,595 meters and 1,003 meters, respectively, and includes 8.6 km of approach and link roads.

Designed to accommodate a traffic density of 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks per day, the tunnel will significantly reduce travel time to Tawang, allowing for faster deployment of troops and heavy weaponry in response to any emergent situations along the Line of Actual Control with China.

The tunnel has been constructed by the Border Roads Organisation
The foundation stone for the Sela Tunnel was laid by PM Modi in February 2019, and its completion marks a milestone in India's border infrastructure push, bridging the gap with neighbouring countries and bolstering national security.

The inauguration ceremony was part of the 'Viksit Bharat Viksit North East' program, highlighting the government's commitment to developing the northeastern states of India. The Sela Tunnel is not only a testament to the nation's engineering prowess but also a symbol of its unwavering dedication to safeguarding its borders and empowering its remote regions.
