Meghwal Remains On The Edge, High And Dry!

Amit Joshi | Silvassa

Meghwal, also known as Maghval and Meghwad, is a small village belonging to Gujarat, located within Nagar Haveli, just south of Silvassa in the Indian Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. This unique geographical positioning has led to a complex administrative situation for the residents of Meghwal.

In January 2022, the government of India announced plans for the Meghwal enclave to become part of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. However, these plans have been deferred, leaving the residents of Meghwal in a state of uncertainty. The reasons for this deferral are not clear, but it is speculated that the imminent elections may have contributed to the delay.

The village of Meghwal, with a population of 2,160 villagers as of February 2018, is rich in landscape with the Daman Ganga River cutting through it, leaving a hilly stretch on one side and plains on the other. Despite its small size, the village’s unique location has made it a point of interest in the ongoing discussions about the reorganisation of union territories in India.

The residents of Meghwal, while officially part of Gujarat, are surrounded by the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. This has led to a unique set of challenges and issues for the villagers, who are caught in the midst of administrative changes.

As the situation stands, the future of Meghwal remains uncertain. The residents, while hopeful for a resolution, continue to live in a state of limbo. The upcoming elections may bring about changes, but until then, the enclave of Meghwal continues to wait for a decision that will determine its administrative future.
