Mumbai's Oldest Samiti Celebrates Durga Pujo With Aplomb
By A Draft Correspondent
Since 1930, the Bombay Durgabari Samiti, the city's oldest, has been a shining example of Mumbai's cultural heritage, keeping alive the ancient traditions of Durga Puja even before India gained its freedom.
Every year, the Samiti members welcome goddess Durga with reverence and love on Panchami, the fifth day of Navratri, and decorate her idol with fragrant flowers and glittering ornaments in the Pandal. The next five days celebrate life and faith, as they worship the ten-armed deity with different rituals and offerings on Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami.

They sing hymns and dance to the beats of the dhak, expressing their joy and gratitude to the Devi who protects them from evil. They also enjoy the delicious bhog with friends and family. They wear new clothes and exchange greetings and gifts, strengthening their bonds and community spirit.
The final day commences with the Sindoor Khela, a ritual of love and friendship among women, followed by the immersion of the Durga idol.
