Energy Transition Deliberations At G20 Meet In Mumbai

The 3rd Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting (ETWG) under India’s G20 Presidency kickstarted in Mumbai on 15 May 2023. Union Minister of State for Railways, Coal and Mines Raosaheb Patil Danve and the Ministry of Power Secretary and G20's Energy Transitions Working Group Chair Alok Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines Vivek Bharadwaj and Secretary of the Ministry of Coal Amrit Lal Meena were among the dignitaries present on the opening day.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the COP26 global climate summit that India will meet a target of net zero emissions by 2070, I am confident that the country with the support of its citizens, will achieve the target. The government plays an important role in setting policies, the private sector in funding and the citizens can play an important role in using energy efficient appliances for the environment," said the Minister of State during his Special Address at the inaugural session.

The three-day meeting brings together over a hundred delegates from G20 member countries, special invitee countries and International Organisations such as International Energy Agency (IEA), World Bank and World Energy Council India engaging in discussions and deliberation on priority areas.

ETWG Chair Alok Kumar is also chairing the 3rd ETWG meeting. During the side event 'Seminar on Just Transition Roadmap', he discussed the importance of the just transition concept and continuity of coal supply in advancing India's efforts to promote renewables and advance on the path to just transition.

After the conclusion of pivotal sessions, the delegates got an opportunity to experience a one-of-its-kind immersive display of India's rich history and cultural heritage at the Gateway of India.

There are six priority areas outlined under India’s G20 Presidency that reflect India's focus on various aspects of energy transition and building global cooperation towards sustainable and clean energy development. 

The six priority areas are:
(i) Energy transition through addressing technology gaps (ii) Low-cost financing for energy transition (iii) Energy security and diversified supply chains (iv) Energy efficiency, industrial low carbon transitions and responsible consumption, (v) Fuels for Future (3F) and (vi) Universal access to clean energy and just, affordable and inclusive energy transition pathway.

The first two meetings of the ETWG were held in Bengaluru and Gandhinagar, respectively. The deliberations in Mumbai will continue to build on the first two ETWG meetings to identify and promote best practices, policies and innovative approaches that can support a just and inclusive energy transition. The goal is to develop a collective roadmap for achieving sustainable and equitable growth while addressing the challenges associated with energy transition effectively.

Eight side events will be held during the Meeting in Mumbai to further enrich the discussions and provide focused insights on various aspects of energy transition. These are as follows:
‘Workshop with MDBs with the aim for mobilising low-cost international finance', ‘Seminar on Just Transition Roadmap’, ‘Seminar on Biofuels’, ‘Seminar on Off-shore Wind’, ‘Sharing global policies and best practices to decarbonise had-to-abate sectors’, ‘Seminar on SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) for clean energy transition’, ‘Synergising the energy transition pathways of G20 ETWG and B20 India Energy Perspective’, and ‘Accelerating Energy Efficiency and Promoting an Energy Efficient Life.’

India's G20 Presidency's is committed to build upon the efforts and outcomes of previous presidencies underlining the continuity and collective pursuit of global cooperation in clean energy transition. India's G20 Presidency aims to continue this trajectory and further strengthen global cooperation in clean energy transition.
