By A Draft Correspondent
Continuing with the rapid mobilisation of Naval and Air assets for quick and safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Sudan, INS Teg on Anti Piracy patrol, diverted to Port Sudan, has been safely evacuating Indian citizens from Port Sudan to Jeddah as part of Operation Kaveri.
The first batch of evacuees returned to New Delhi in a commercial plane on 26 April 2023. The second batch of 246 Indians landed in Mumbai on 27 April in IAF's C17 Globemaster aircraft.
As part of Operation Kaveri, the Indian government has been evacuating its citizens from the conflict zones in war-hit Sudan. Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar had announced the launch of Operation Kaveri on 24 April 2023 to bring back stranded Indian citizens from Sudan.
The evacuees are being taken in buses to Port Sudan and from there to Jeddah in IAF's heavy-lift transport aircraft and Indian Navy's ships. Commercial flights and IAF aircraft are carrying them from Jeddah back home.
A transit camp for the evacuees has been set up at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Separate control rooms have been set up by India in Jeddah and Port Sudan.
