Gateway Of India Show Commemorates BritExit

As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the completion of 75 years of the withdrawal of British Army from India, a Multimedia Light & Sound Show was inaugurated by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra Tourism Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri who had joined the event from New Delhi through video conferencing, at Mumbai's Gateway of India on 28 February 2023.

The program commenced with a musical performance by the Indian Naval band followed by the lighting of the lamp and the launch of the Light and Sound Show. Renowned choreographer Shiamak Davar also gave a power-packer performance at the event.

At the event, Deputy Chief Minister also announced the release of a customised My Stamp symbolising the Light and Sound Show at Gateway of India. The show was jointly organised by the State Department of Tourism (DoT, Maharashtra), Union Ministry for Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL).

Commemorating 75 years of the departure of the Somerset Light Infantry, the last of the British troops to leave Indian soil, from Mumbai on 28 February 1948, the launch has become DoT’s flagship event as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

The multimedia show is a joint initiative of Maharashtra Department of Tourism and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. to restore the glory of the iconic Gateway of India by launching a permanent Multimedia Light and Sound Show at the monument.

It broadly covers the various facets of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's personality, Maharashtra's contribution to India's freedom struggle, glimpses of a progressive India and the PanchPran of Amrit Kaal laid by PM Modi as a vision for the next 25 years.

At the inauguration, the show highlighted the story of the valour of the people of Maharashtra and India's progress employing innovative projection technology synchronised with intelligent lighting and laser. For the first time in India, the existing façade were used with movable props to create a multi-dimensional and multi-layered experience.

This is also a unique permanent installation that shall be using the additional rolled-in screens for the projection along with the façade. All three arches of the Gateway of India will have these rolled-in screens positioned just before the start of the show.
