At a time when women were not allowed to go to school, Ahilyabai’s father Mankoji Sindhia taught her to read and write.
In 1754, her husband was killed in the battle of Kumbher, leaving her a widow at the age of 29. Her father-in-law forbid her from committing Sati. He went on to become her pillar of support.
After the death of her father-in-law Malhar Holkar, her son was instated as the king. After his death, Ahilyabai ascended the throne and became ruler of Indore on 11 December 1767.
Herwad Gram Panchayat members headed by Sarpanch Surgonda Patil paid rich tributes on Ahilyabai Holkar's 297th birth anniversary with social reformer Pramod Zinjade.
The Kolhapur village has spearheaded the widow reform movement across the state and for the first time in India.
