Light matters!
Lighting plays a very important role in a home and whether you’re designing your home for the first time or renovating it, this is one area that shouldn’t be ignored, maintains Soumya Bhattacharya
The best thing about adding lighting fixtures in a home is that besides being functional, they are a great way to increase a room’s style quotient. “Recessed lighting in particular is a great addition to living rooms since it adds a touch of simple elegance,” says Chembur-based interior designer Shalini Khanna.
One of the main reasons for the popularity of recessed lighting is that it offers a clean and streamlined look to a room. “It can significantly brighten a room making it appear larger than its actual dimensions and are also great when it comes highlighting certain portions of a room,” she says. Since the actual wiring is hidden behind a false ceiling, it doesn’t mar the beauty of a room like traditional light fixtures.
Having recessed lighting installed in your rooms can be quite a hassle-free affair but make sure you stay away from some of these common mistakes if you’re a first timer. “The first thing to remember is that recessed lighting should never be placed too close too each other and never in a row in the centre of a room,” says Mulund based interior decorator Shubra Ghosh. “As a general rule, fixtures that are three -inches wide should be placed at least three feet apart from each other and as the size of the fixture increases by inches so does the distance by feet,” she says.
When using recessed lighting to highlight certain features of a room such as an artwork on the wall, make sure that the light fixture is installed directly in front of the object that needs to be highlighted. The distance between the light fixture and the painting can range from twelve to eighteen inches. Too close and they may either harm the painting or create a glare and if it’s too far it won’t actually highlight the piece.
A recessed light fixture consists of three main components: the housing the bulb and the trim. The housing is the main part of the fixture and is installed right at the beginning before the false ceiling is installed while the trim is what you actually see which are available in myriad finishes, designs and even shapes. Buyers interested in recessed lighting can choose from a variety of bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are quite inexpensive and work great when used to provide general lighting to a room.
You can also purchase recessed lighting fixtures with a number of additional features such as adjustable eyeballs that can be aimed to exact areas while highlighting or opt for trims to reduce glare and focus the light more sharply.

“Reflective bulbs have a highly reflective surface even at the back of the bulb while halogen bulbs offer clean white light that work well with general lighting and spot lighting for highlighting purposes,” explains Thane-based electrician Rajesh Borade.
