Mumbai Police Issue Order With Guidelines For City Renters
By A Draft Correspondent
In a move aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the city, the Mumbai police have recently issued a preventative order along with fresh guidelines for homeowners who rent out their properties. The order emphasises the need to implement certain measures to prevent terrorist activities, subversive acts, riots and other anti-social behaviours that could potentially be perpetrated by individuals disguising themselves as tenants.
Immediate action is deemed essential in the event of any such suspicious activities, as it is crucial to prevent any harm or untoward incidents. The order, effective from 00:01 hrs on the 8 July 2023 until 24:00 hrs on the 5 September 2023, a duration of 60 days, unless withdrawn earlier, sets forth the time frame for implementing these regulations.

According to the order, every landlord, owner, or person involved in the property business within the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissioner must promptly provide the relevant details of their tenants through the citizen portal, accessible at www.mumbaipolice.gov.in. This requirement extends to all accommodations that have been let, sub-let, or rented out to any individual.
In the case of a foreign tenant, both the owner and the tenant are obligated to furnish information such as their name, nationality, passport details, and the purpose of their stay in the city. These additional measures aim to enhance the scrutiny and monitoring of individuals who are not citizens of the country.
The order explicitly states that failure to comply with these regulations will result in punishment under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. This highlights the seriousness with which the Mumbai police view the issue and underscores the importance of adhering to these guidelines for the security of the city's residents.
